Made Known

On the Third Sunday of Easter in Year A, we hear the remarkable story from Luke’s Gospel about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. At first, they do not know Jesus as he comes to walk alongside them. Two things are described with great beauty. Jesus breaks open the Scriptures in their hearing in a way that elucidates how the prophets foretold the ways the Messiah would come, ways that match the events of Jesus’s life. The second thing is that Jesus gives them bread at their meal on the road. He breaks the bread in their sight after having taken it up and offering thanks. Breaking open the Scriptures and thankfully breaking apart the bread to give them a taste opens their eyes to recognize him as Jesus, now risen. May it happen to us as well.

Take some time if you wish to let Jesus break open the Good News for you as you read Luke 24:13-35. And pray deliberately the following Collect for the Third Sunday of Easter:

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Here are some lines of verse that came to me as I read the Gospel passage and prayed this collect:

A MORSEL FOR LIFE

There it is, in the middle of the table
Break off a bite; bring it to your mouth
still warm from the oven
grain flavors and a trace of yeast
The nourishing staple satisfies at once.

There it is, open on the desk
Scan your way down a leaf; ponder what you see
stories beg slow rumination
its bits release complex flavors
Sustenance: puzzling - boosting – guiding, all at once.
